The leaning Virgin on the cathedral of Albert, still there after the horrific bombardment in July, 1916 of the town, was a perpetual icon for soldiers and populace alike throughout the war. It was said that when she finally fell, the war would be over.
French engineers are reputed to have stabilised the golden Virgin, so that it would have a better chance of lasting through the conflict. Since restored to its golden glory, the Virgin is today one of the most iconic public sculptures in all of France.
