The King’s Café at King’s College, London, has probably not changed a great deal over the past fifty years, much like other student dining rooms, as for example at City University in Islington.
The first time I walked into the Dining Room at University College London, straight off the plane from Philadelphia in the late autumn of 1978, I was shocked at how primitive the place seemed. Although there may be attractive wall paintings/prints and fancier lighting and decor these days, I suspect that the food service area, the queues, the till and the trays are still very much in evidence.
Institutional, in other words, serving many many students and sometimes faculty. Oh, the coffee might be better today than it was in the 1970s.
