Aldon Law’s book, The Song Cannot be Silenced, is gently enthralling. From the start I felt a relaxed confidence in the author and, although it is clear these are sad and quite terrifying times he writes about, I knew my hand would be held as the story unfolded for me. The characters captured my interest and concern for them from first meeting them at the start of their life’s journey together and I was with them all, my heart in my mouth, until the very end. It is totally captivating.
The historical context of the story opened my eyes to aspects I had never thought about before. It is a quite new take on that time when so many lives were lost. Here we are with some survivors whose tale is brought to life. The other characters who tell a different tale so many years later, introduce a new dimension, and are equally engaging. My curiosity was immediately piqued as whether there would be a connection to emerge eventually. I was not disappointed.
All in all very enjoyable, beautifully written and cleverly constructed, deep in its insight into the interweaving of times, environment, cultures and humanity, yet wonderfully readable. A book I will always be glad to have read.
